Department of Forensic Medicine started functioning in the year 1965. At the time of inception, Medical Superintendent used to do the teaching work. Later the faculty from the Department of Pathology was assigned to look after the department. Since then, following staff members have worked in the department; Dr. K. K. Shrivastava, Dr. Renu Nigam, Dr. (Mrs.) V. Agrawal, Dr. P. K. Pradhan, Dr. S. N. Phadke, Dr. S. K. Jain, Dr. C. B. Shukla, and Dr. K. C. Dubey. During the same period, the following staff members have worked as demonstrator in the department; Dr. A. K. Verma, Dr. Badri Singh, Dr. M. P. Dwivedi, Dr. D. N. Gautam, Dr. B. K. Sharma, Dr. N. M. Unda, Dr. Amarnath Gupta, Dr. L. R. Bhagat, Dr. Ashok Kumar Sutrakar, Dr. U. B. Prasad, Dr. Chakresh Jain, and Dr. Nitin Prasad. Dr. Priyanka Verma served as Medical Officer in 2015-2016.

The department is presently being headed by Dr. Shashidhar Prasad Garg, Professor & Head since 28.09.2015. At present Dr. Harshwardhan Khushalrao Khartade as Associate Professor; Dr. Rajneesh Kumar Pandey and Dr. Yashwant Kumar Singh as Assistant Professors; Dr. Dhruv Kumar Mishra, and Dr. Raj Kumar Patel as Demonstrators are working in the department.

Initially, the department used to do only teaching work, but since 1983 it has taken up medico-legal and autopsy work. The department is conducting autopsy work on five days (Monday to Friday) per week and expert opinion cases (autopsy & other medico-legal cases) on all days, referred from different hospitals of Rewa and adjoining districts.

Efforts are ongoing towards starting of postgraduate course (M.D.) in the department. The department had been running without subject expert teaching faculty for a long time since it came into existence. It received first faculty member as Dr. K. C. Dubey (MS-Anatomy, DFM) in March 1991 (relieved in December 1993). It was headed by faculty members of Departments of Pathology & Microbiology for a long time. The list of Heads of Department includes Dr. Renu Nigam, Dr. P. K. Pradhan, Dr. S. N. Phadke, Dr. S. K. Jain-Pathology (July 1980 to January 1991), Dr. C. B. Shukla-Microbiology (December 1993 to August 2005) & October 2010 to October 2012), Dr. D. K. Mishra (28.08.2010 to 30.09.2010 and 24.09.2015 to 27.09.2015), Dr. Shashidhar Prasad Garg (02.09.2005 to 27.08.2010, 15.10.2012 to 01.07.2014 and 28.09.2015 to till date) and Dr. J. N. Soni (02.07.2014 to 23.09.2015).

Photography Section of the department has been made functional since 27.11.2015 as Mr. Ajay Kumar Dwivedi has joined as Photo Artist (Photographer).
